Alaska is a heartfelt personal project that I chose to capture in straight black & white photographic style.
From the majestic mountains, to the spectacular tidewater glaciers, and the quite elegance of the Misty Fjords of Ketchikan (with the stoic New Eddystone Rock formation), Alaska with its abundance of natural beauty reminds us that we are only stewards of the earth and tasked with its conservation.
We often take our local environment for granted, losing sight of the immeasurable beauty of the earth and all its awe and wonderment.
Alaska, is the largest state in the USA, and it is facing significant environmental challenges due to global warming and climate change. While all of the state has seen an increase in temperatures, warming in northern Alaska has seen an increase of almost 6 degrees Fahrenheit.
Global Warming has had a significant impact on Alaska's environment, particularly in terms of melting glaciers and permafrost. The state's glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, with the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau retreating by over two miles since the 1950's. This melting has led to rising sea levels and increased coastal erosion, which threatens to displace many Alaskan communities. Permafrost, which is frozen soil that covers much of Alaska, is also melting due to global warming.
It is my hope that in viewing these images, you are filled with a sense of awe and wonderment as I was when I created them. It is an inspirational message that I wish to share, and a desire to make a difference and help create a sustainable future.
